Bury The Hatchet (2010)

BURY THE HATCHET follows three Mardi Gras Indian "Big Chiefs" in New Orleans, who are descendants of slaves sheltered by Louisiana Native Americans. Historically marked by conflict, these African-American tribes now parade through the city on Mardi Gras, showcasing intricately crafted Native-American inspired costumes made throughout the year. Instead of fighting, tribes compete to see who has the most impressive suit. Director Aaron Walker's five-year documentary offers a personal look at this often unseen aspect of New Orleans life, revealing the Chiefs' daily struggles with police harassment, neighborhood changes, apathy from younger generations, aging, and natural disasters. Yet, they demonstrate a strong will to endure.
