New York in the Fifties (2001)

In the 1950s, New York City was a vibrant center for new art, open lifestyles, nightlife, jazz music, and political change. The film blends archival footage of the city with interviews and images of prominent figures like Kerouac, Ginsberg, Baldwin, and Basie. Writers, actors, and artists including Joan Didion, Robert Redford, and William F. Buckley offer contemporary reflections on this era. Based on Dan Wakefield's novel, the film also follows Wakefield’s journey from a rebellious youth in Indianapolis to New York, where he pursued his dream of becoming a novelist, finding love, connecting with others, and searching for meaning.
