Description:
Shanichari, a beautiful woman born into a lower caste, endures a life marked by hardship: discrimination, poverty, the loss of her parents, an abusive husband, and a troublesome son. The film's title references a Rajasthani custom where aristocratic women traditionally remained secluded and veiled, hiring professional female mourners – rudaalis – to publicly express grief that they were often prevented from showing, or perhaps didn’t feel compelled to display, due to their social standing. Underwritten by the National Film Development Corporation and Doordarshan, and adapted from a short story by Mahasweta Devi, a renowned Bengali author known for her stories about the struggles of women from lower castes.
