In 1990, Maassen took top honors at two of the Netherlands' most prestigious comedy competitions: the Groninger Studenten Cabaret Festival (GSCF) and Cameretten. While the GSCF jury acknowledged a general lack of quality among the contestants that year, they awarded Maassen first prize, noting he was the best of a weak field, though not exceptionally talented. His popularity steadily grew in subsequent years, particularly with students. Maassen's comedic approach centered on stand-up: performing solo on stage, delivering jokes and stories to entertain audiences, relying solely on his wit, a common style for Dutch comedians at the time.
