Description:
Following my remake of John Cassavetes' "Faces" (1968), I chose to remake another American classic, Dennis Hopper's "Easy Rider" (1969). "Easy Rider" appeals to me because of its depiction of 1960s counterculture – a focus different from "Faces," which is more centered on the 1950s – and its exploration of finding one's place. I broke down the original film into scenes, as I did with "Faces," and then recreated each scene with a single shot filmed at the original location, rather than using existing shots from the original movie. My version of "Easy Rider" attempts to locate today’s counterculture (if it exists) by replacing the 1960s soundtrack with music I listen to now. ~ James Benning
