From July 2007 to June 2008, acclaimed filmmaker James Benning constructed replicas of two significant American cabins in the remote High Sierras: Henry David Thoreau's hut from Walden Pond and the one-room shack in Montana where Theodore Kaczynski (the Unabomber) planned his 16-year bombing campaign. This pairing of simple structures explores complex and ongoing American ideas about personal freedom, civic duty, and the law; individual conscience, democracy, and protest; the importance of nature, wilderness, and resource use; American uniqueness, environmental protection, and trust in technology; the need for self-renewal, success, and the possibility of separation.
