Description:
In the 1930s, hundreds of German filmmakers – actors and crew – escaped the Nazis. This film uses voice-overs, historical footage, and film clips to explore Berlin's flourishing film industry in the 1920s. It then follows a group of producers, directors, composers, editors, writers, and actors as they journey to Hollywood: some found success, while many struggled to find work. The film profiles figures like Erich Pommer, Joseph May, Ernst Lubitsch, Fritz Lang, Billy Wilder, and Peter Lorre. Once established in Hollywood, these exiles supported each other, providing housing and financial assistance to help others flee persecution. Some contributed to anti-Nazi films, including Casablanca. German Expressionism's distinctive themes and lighting significantly influenced the development of film noir in Hollywood.
