Description:
Unlike many Italian films of the 1940s, Augusto Genina's Cielo Sulla Palude premiered in Venice instead of Rome. The film's American title is Heaven Over the Marshes, and the story primarily unfolds in the disease-ridden Pontine Marshes near Rome. This was the home of Maria Goretti, a devout young woman murdered by a man attempting to seduce her. The film explains the reasons for Maria’s brief life on Earth, which led to her sainthood shortly after the film's release. Ines Orsini portrays Maria Goretti. Cielo Sulla Palude marked a return for director Augusto Genina, who had been blacklisted following World War II due to his earlier pro-fascist films.
