Description:

In a small southern frontier town, an elderly man known as "Nail Li" claims chess mastery by pinning a piece to the board, daring anyone to dislodge it. At the time, many young people were migrating to the countryside. The town's new party secretary, played by Niu Ben, becomes angered after losing a game and dispatches a team to the city to find talented individuals in music, chess, calligraphy, and painting. Wang Yisheng, a young man from Beijing known as "The Chess Fool," had been wrongly labeled a counter-revolutionary during the Cultural Revolution but was discovered by the team searching for him. Unconcerned with his destination, he is content with food and chess, stating, "What can relieve my worries? Only playing chess." He becomes deeply involved in the game, playing memorable matches against various masters in the unfamiliar town.
