Description:
"The Curse of Quon Gwon," a rare and largely enigmatic early Chinese-American film made by a woman, is one of the earliest American silent features. Only two reels remain, and the film lacks any intertitles, making its plot difficult to fully understand. A 1917 review described the film as exploring a Chinese god's curse on his people due to Western influence, and also addressing the challenges of Chinese assimilation into American life. Initially unsuccessful because distributors were hesitant to handle a film about Chinese-Americans without relying on stereotypes, it played only twice after its 1917 premiere. Rediscovered in 2004 and preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2005, the film suffered a significant financial loss.
