Description:
Directed by Andre Cayette, a former lawyer critical of the French death penalty, *We Are All Murderers* features four main characters – played by Marcel Mouloudji, Raymond Pellegrin, Antoine Balpetre, and Julien Verdeur – who are unapologetically murderers. The film doesn't excuse their actions but instead condemns the brutal process of their execution. French law dictates that condemned men are kept unaware of their execution time and then forcibly taken to the guillotine without any chance for spiritual solace or personal peace. The film’s harrowing depiction leaves the audience feeling as dehumanized as the characters themselves. Though criticized by French authorities, *We Are All Murderers* received a special jury prize at the 1952 Cannes Film Festival.
