Description:
In drought-stricken Northeastern Brazil, families migrate in search of water and a better life. Some head to Recife, hoping to find passage to Santos and a new beginning in the South. In Recife's poor district, an elderly washerwoman struggles to provide for her family. Her husband, Zé Luis, a former sailor, is mentally unstable following a severe head injury. Their eldest son, Raimundo, works at a grocery store and sells mangoes to save money for a move to the Southeast with his girlfriend, Aurora. Their daughter considers prostitution for a better life, while their youngest son battles a serious illness.
