Description:
Arne Sucksdorff’s drama centers on four homeless children—Jorginho, Rico, Lici, and Paulinho—fighting to survive in the Rio de Janeiro slums. They earn money shining shoes, scavenging for food, and pickpocketing, all while hoping to escape their life on the streets. When Rico, who previously escaped from a harsh institution in Caxambu, becomes ill, he decides to return there rather than die on the streets. A poignant look at poverty and strength, the film was chosen for the 1965 Cannes Film Festival.
