Description:

In 17th-century Brazil, Quilombo dos Palmares was a thriving, democratic society founded by escaped slaves. This film explores its origins as a refuge for all kinds of outcasts – including Indigenous people and Jews. Ganga Zumba (Toni Tornado) rises to become Quilombo's first elected leader in the Western Hemisphere. The Portuguese authorities seek to crush Zumba and his people, but the Quilombians are prepared to defend their freedom. Though the community ultimately falls, Zumba's followers continue his legacy in the hills. Director Carlos Diegues draws parallels between Quilombo's history and contemporary Brazil.
