So Sorry (2012)

Following his film "Disturbing the Peace," "So Sorry" (named after Ai Weiwei's 2009 Munich exhibition) details the early escalation of conflict between Ai Weiwei and the Chinese government. The film follows Ai Weiwei's studio as they investigate the deaths of students in the Sichuan earthquake, uncovering corruption and faulty construction, which leads to a confrontation with Chengdu police. After being beaten by the police, Ai Weiwei travels to Munich to prepare for his exhibition at Haus der Kunst. The beating results in a brain hemorrhage requiring emergency surgery. These events mark the start of Ai Weiwei's ongoing struggle and surveillance by state authorities.
