Description:
Unlike typical operas, the Beggar's Opera isn't a single work but a series of adaptations starting with John Gay's popular 1728 political satire. Composers and writers have reworked it ever since, most notably Bertholt Brecht and Kurt Weill's A Threepenny Opera. These versions often focus on the lives of the poor and criminal, featuring the character Macheath. This production adapts Gay's original by Vaclav Havel, the Czech freedom fighter, writer, and first president of post-communist Czechoslovakia, retaining many elements of its theatrical roots. While some critics found the adaptation overly faithful to Havel's stage production, those interested in theater, philosophy, and history may appreciate it.
