Description:
Post-World War II Hong Kong. Carol, unhappy in her marriage to Walter, has an affair with Paul. When Walter discovers the affair, he gives her an ultimatum: join him in China to combat a cholera outbreak, or face a public divorce. She convinces him to consider another option: if Paul's wife agrees to a quick divorce and Paul marries Carol within a week, Walter will get a quiet divorce. Carol offers this proposal to Paul, but he refuses, prioritizing his wife's feelings. Seeing no other way, Carol goes with Walter to the village. There, she meets Tim and is introduced to nuns at a local hospital-convent. Working at the convent helps her question her own life. She discovers she is pregnant and unsure of the father. She tells Walter, who regrets her honesty. Soon after, Walter contracts cholera and dies. Carol returns to Hong Kong, facing an uncertain future.
