Description:
Early 1900s Rome: A detached psychiatrist, who runs a women's asylum and lacks creativity in his work, needs a wet nurse for his baby after his wife struggles with postpartum. He brings Annette, a peasant woman, to Rome, requiring her to leave her own child behind. To the wife’s dismay, Annette quickly connects with the baby, displaying a natural affinity. Amidst growing leftist unrest, Annette, whose lover is a teacher imprisoned for political reasons, asks the doctor to teach her to read and write. The clash of their personalities, the doctor's uninspired worldview, the marital difficulties, and the two infants create escalating tension.
