Description:

In 1944, Lye relocated to New York City to work as a director for the documentary newsreel, *The March of Time*. He established himself in the West Village, becoming part of a circle of artists who would later become known as the Abstract Expressionists. He fostered New York's new filmmaking scene, mentoring figures like Francis Lee, collaborated with Hans Richter, and worked with Ian Hugo on *Bells of Atlantis*. *Color Cry* utilized a technique called "rayogram," employing fabric stencils to create images synchronized with a mournful blues song by Sonny Terry, which Lye envisioned as the cry of a slave escaping.
