WWE SummerSlam was the inaugural annual pay-per-view event from the World Wrestling Federation, held on August 29, 1988, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Created to compete with World Championship Wrestling, it was one of the WWF's first four annual pay-per-view shows. The main event featured The Mega Powers (Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage) against their rivals, The Mega Bucks (Ted DiBiase and André the Giant). Hogan and Savage won after a distraction from Miss Elizabeth, who briefly exposed her bikini bottom to the referee. The preliminary matches culminated in The Ultimate Warrior defeating The Honky Tonk Man for the WWF Intercontinental Championship, ending the longest reign in the title's history in approximately thirty seconds.
