Description:
In 1942 Transylvania, a devout Hungarian woodcutter lives a simple life with his family and community of fellow squatters in the mountains. Their peaceful existence is shattered when a lumber company claims their land, demanding they work for the company or be displaced. This Hungarian film offers a starkly realistic portrayal of mountain life's hardships, influencing the Italian Neorealist movement. Directed by Istvan Szots, the film won the Biennale Cup at the Venice Film Festival, but was banned by the Nazis for its religious themes and remained unseen publicly until after World War II.
