Description:

For over 130 years, until 1996, more than 100,000 First Nations children in Canada were legally compelled to attend government-funded schools operated by various Christian organizations. There were 80 such residential schools nationwide, often located far from their homes and traditional lands, separating children from their families. The children there suffered abuse, hardship, mental trauma, and the systematic destruction of their culture. These schools were part of a larger effort to assimilate Indigenous people into Canadian society, with the stated goal of "killing the Indian in the child." Told from the perspectives of two survivors, Glen Anaquod and Lyna Hart, "We Were Children" is the powerful true story of their experiences.
