Description:
In 1213, while Queen Gertrude of Meran's court enjoys music, restless Hungarian nobles observe, plotting under King Petur. Their resentment grows as Bánk bán, the king's representative fighting afar, leaves his wife Melinda vulnerable to the advances of Queen Gertrude’s brother, Otto. Petur recalls Bánk, who then accuses the nobles of treason. However, Otto’s advisor, Biberach, tells Bánk that Petur is attempting to seduce Melinda. Encouraged by the Queen, Otto prepares an attack and pursues Melinda through the castle. She rejects him, but remains in a difficult situation. Bánk witnesses this and is shocked, believing his wife is being unfaithful.
