Description:
A detailed look at the diatom, a single-celled organism first seen through a microscope in 1703. Magnified ten thousand times, we witness its unique movement: water shoots through its shell, and it releases a slimy substance to glide. Powered by sunlight, diatoms reproduce and spread. A narrator explains to a young woman that their remains cover a third of the Earth's surface, and they're used in industries like petroleum, explosives, and polish. Some diatoms live alone, others in intricate colonies resembling fans. They can move together in groups, and many small creatures feed on them. We observe them sliding past each other in long chains.
