Pausa Italiana (2004)

In 1998, filmmaker Balagura felt constrained by Ukraine's television industry and moved to Italy, seeking a more culturally fertile environment. Arriving without proper immigration status and with his family, he soon faced practical challenges. In 2004, using a borrowed mini-DV camera and a friend as operator, he filmed 'Pausa Italiana'. From a rural Italian village, Balagura documented his surroundings while also examining his own experience as an immigrant – a perspective rarely captured in documentary. He blends precise recordings with a narrative style reminiscent of literature, creating a unique film that merges personal experience and cultural observation. The film blurs the lines between self and other, observer and observed, reality and broader themes.
