Ikigai (2024)

"Ikigai" centers on Mayumi, a nine-year-old girl navigating her dual Japanese and American heritage. Her mother, Hanako, uses their traditional Japanese dance, Nihon Buyo, as a way to connect with Mayumi's new schoolmates. When Mayumi prepares for a show-and-tell, she intends to show her classmates they have much in common. However, Hanako unexpectedly joins the presentation and teaches the class a Japanese dance, inadvertently highlighting Mayumi's cultural background. Feeling ashamed, Mayumi seeks guidance from her parents, who encourage her to reconsider her approach and present her heritage with pride.
