Description:
Russell approached his composer biopics with passion, but this one was different. He found Strauss's music "bombastic, sham and hollow," and deeply resented the composer's supposed neutrality while collaborating with the Nazis. The film portrays Strauss in exaggerated and often ridiculous scenarios: facing attacks from nuns after embracing Nietzsche, engaging in duels with envious husbands, and seemingly overpowering his critics with his compositions. It also depicts him as someone who excessively idealizes the women in his life and his own fantasies.
