Description:
On a stormy night in rural Vermont, midwife Sibyl Danforth, along with the father and an assistant, attends a homebirth. As labor progresses, the mother experiences complications, leading Sibyl to believe a hospital delivery is necessary. However, a dead phone line and severe weather prevent any travel. The following morning, the mother dies, seemingly from a stroke. Amidst the chaos, Sibyl performs an emergency C-section to save the baby. While the infant survives, the mother is dead, and tragedy is clear. Sibyl's assistant insists the woman was still alive during the surgery, resulting in manslaughter charges and a life irrevocably altered for Sibyl.
