Translation Series (2000)

This work explores the connection between recording and reproduction in film. Using 16mm film as a light-sensitive medium, I directly exposed the film stock by holding it to light sources, creating images that capture both the light of a location and the movement of a gesture. These resulting films are a series of small recordings that translate movement from space into time, from measurements into physical dimensions, and from photons into film grain. While living in Paris, I mapped my apartment by exposing film to the light within each room.
