Remembering the High Lonesome (2003)

Remembering the High Lonesome chronicles the creation of a landmark documentary film while profiling John Cohen, a filmmaker, photographer, artist, and musician. Through interviews, Cohen's photographs, and footage from his film *The High Lonesome Sound: Kentucky Mountain Music*, director Tom Davenport explores Cohen's 1950s journey to rural Kentucky to document the lives of its people and his encounter with musician Roscoe Holcomb. The film also examines the emergence of a new artistic movement and counterculture shaped by Cohen’s connections with the Beat Generation, abstract expressionist painters, and the Folk Music Revival, and considers the impact of an outsider documenting Appalachian life and culture.
