Clan of the Painted Lady (2025)

Director Jennifer Chiu explores her family's heritage to uncover the story of the Hakka people—their language, culture, and journey. Originally from northern China, the Hakka settled in the south and became known as the "guest people," often facing social challenges. Many dispersed to locations like Mauritius, India, Jamaica, and Canada, including British Columbia's Lower Mainland, where Chiu grew up. Using archival Super 8 footage and intimate interviews with family and community leaders, she reveals a history long hidden. Chiu presents a heartfelt film that navigates themes of family secrets, the difficulties of adapting to new cultures, and the uncertain future of Hakka traditions, without becoming overly burdened by them.
