Jailbirds – Closed Society (2005)

This documentary offers a look into the daily lives of inmates at a high-security prison near Bucharest, Romania. Filmmaker Andrei Schwartz spent over six months observing the prisoners. Rahova prison is severely overcrowded, with up to 22 men sharing a single cell. The film centers on the stories of several individuals, depicting their efforts to navigate each day without being broken. It also reveals how the prisoners maintain their humanity within a harsh system, finding ways to cope with their difficult lives through creativity, humor, and a persistent hope.
