Description:
Li Baicheng is a charming fortune teller who works with sex workers and others living on the fringes of Chinese society – people whose livelihoods, like his own, are technically illegal. He practices his traditional craft in a village near Beijing while caring for his wife Pearl, who is deaf and mute and whom he rescued from an abusive family. When the authorities launch a crackdown on fortune tellers and prostitutes during the winter, Li and Pearl are forced to flee to his hometown, where he confronts painful memories of his past. The film is structured with chapter headings reminiscent of popular stories from the Qing Dynasty.
