Aurora Borealis (2002)

This film pays tribute to the surrealist cinematic collages of Joseph Cornell and Jean Painleve. Using only science and nature footage, the film strips away explanatory elements to highlight dreamlike imagery and shifts in scale, connecting the very small to the cosmic. Unexpected additions of creatures and scenes create a sense of nighttime mystery and unsettling perception. More like an alchemical exploration than a scientific one, it focuses on decay and renewal, accompanied by a hypnotic soundtrack from Messiaen.
