Description:
Completed in 1959 and filmed in Chicago, *The Cry of Jazz* is a documentary by Edward O. Bland, a filmmaker, composer, and arranger. It examines the relationship between music and race, predicting what Bland termed "the death of jazz." A significant film in Black cinema, it foreshadows later civil unrest. The film also contains the only known footage of Sun Ra during his time in Chicago, alongside numerous images of tenor saxophonist John Gilmore and the Arkestra performing in local nightclubs, all captured in striking black and white.
