Description:
After years directing screenplays, dos Santos returns to his literary roots with a film adaptation of five stories by Brazilian author João Guimarães Rosa. Embracing magical realism, the film centers on a farming family haunted by the disappearance of their father, who abandoned them by sailing down the river, a journey his son continues to communicate with him from the riverbank. The film presents a mysterious and solemn vision of rural Brazil while also satirizing religious faith. When the family moves to the city, their youngest member, a captivating little girl, is revealed to possess miraculous abilities, suggesting she is a saint. -Harvard Film Archive
