Description:
In a Berlin tenement, Mutter Krause struggles to support her daughter Erna and son Paul. They share their building with "the Tenant," his fiancée Friede, a prostitute, and her child. Mutter Krause works delivering newspapers, but her son's alcoholism drains their meager income. Overdue payment for the newspapers leads to accusations of theft and a threat of arrest. Desperate, Mutter Krause pawns a cherished keepsake from her late husband. Paul later breaks into the pawn shop, escaping with the item but ultimately being arrested. Meanwhile, Erna becomes involved with a young Communist who inspires her to embrace the ideology and find honest work to help her mother.
