Description:
This is the story of Dr. Evelyn Hooker, often called "The Rosa Parks of Gay Rights." In the restrictive 1950s, she conducted pioneering research that revealed a groundbreaking truth: being gay is not a mental illness. Her findings caused a major stir in the medical world and ultimately led to a significant step forward for LGBTQ+ rights. In 1974, Dr. Hooker's research, combined with activism, helped the American Psychiatric Association remove homosexuality from its list of disorders. The film features startling archival footage of harmful "cures" for homosexuality, images from the hidden gay community during the McCarthy era, and home movies of writer Christopher Isherwood, bringing to life a crucial chapter in history.
