Description:
The Innu, an Indigenous people, have endured decades of hardship. They were forced to live in appalling conditions, in homes little better than makeshift shelters, lacking basic sanitation. Human waste was openly discarded, contaminating the environment where children played. Facing a loss of dignity, many turned to self-destructive behaviors. Alcoholism became widespread, and substance abuse among children was rampant. Chronic illness was common. Deprived of their culture, purpose, and hope, they experienced alarmingly high rates of suicide. This suffering did not occur in a developing nation, but in Canada, a country often lauded as a desirable place to live. For millennia, the Innu thrived as a strong and independent people.
