Description:
The story centers on Bernard, an old classmate of Olivier's who is about to take his baccalaureate exam. He discovers he is illegitimate and uses this as an excuse to leave home. He sleeps in Olivier's bed, where Olivier mentions a recent, disappointing encounter with a prostitute. Later, Bernard steals a suitcase belonging to Olivier's uncle, Edouard, leading to a series of problems. As a result, Bernard becomes Edouard's secretary. Olivier, feeling jealous, is then taken by the cynical Comte de Passavant on a trip to the Mediterranean.
