In 1968, seven years had passed since Elvis Presley performed live. His first television special featured him in his signature black leather suit, performing classic songs solo and with friends and his original bandmates in intimate settings that foreshadowed modern "unplugged" performances. The show also included elaborate production numbers. Originally titled "Elvis," the program was taped in June 1968 in Burbank and premiered on NBC on December 3rd, becoming the network's highest-rated show of the year and season. Considered a pivotal moment in rock music history and a brilliant milestone in Elvis’s career, the special reignited his creative energy. Following this success, Elvis focused on recording, completed his film commitments, and returned to full-time concert performances, launching a new phase of his career.
