Description:

This film offers an intimate view of sand and rock sea urchins. On a beach, a man unearths a sand urchin, carefully returning it to the sand where it disappears into the grains. Close-up imagery reveals how the urchin extracts nutrients from the sand through its intestines. Using 200,000x magnification, we examine the suckered spines of a rock urchin, illustrated to demonstrate their function. The urchin approaches a rock, and we observe its three-fingered jaws – pedicellaria – filtering algae and debris. Microscopic views reveal cilia, less than 0.001 ml long, constantly in motion, creating whirlpools. The film concludes with a sunset on the shore, interspersed with occasional French subtitles highlighting specific details to observe.
