Description:

Barney Elliott, a local camera shop owner, captured the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse on film. The footage shows Leonard Coatsworth walking away from the bridge after leaving his car. In 1998, the Library of Congress recognized the footage as culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant, adding it to the U.S. National Film Registry. It remains a key cautionary example for students of engineering, architecture, and physics. Elliott's original 16mm Kodachrome film, shot at 16 frames per second, is often seen in black and white due to early newsreel copies made from the original.
