The start of the new decade saw a record number of teams hoping to challenge for the championship. After winning in 1979, Ferrari and Jody Scheckter faced a tough battle. Team Williams, with Alan Jones at the wheel, emerged as a strong new contender in Formula One. However, victory wouldn't come easily; it took the entire 1980 season. Jones won the first race, but struggled to maintain the lead. Nelson Piquet of Brabham capitalized on this, winning the Dutch and US GPs to take the championship lead with only two races left. The pressure was on Williams and Jones to fight for the title.
