Doah avoids expressing emotions, especially as she navigates a difficult divorce and custody fight. She uses a strategy of emotional detachment to stay protected. As a school counselor, she helps students with their problems while suppressing her own pain, hiding her vulnerabilities from her demanding mother and her emotionally sterile job. This carefully constructed composure begins to crumble when a moment of anger during a visit with her daughter shatters her defenses.
