Description:
Born in Helsinki during World War II, twin sisters Helena and Irene are left with their grandmother, a staunch communist, by their mother who runs off with a German soldier. Raised under communist principles, their sheltered life is upended by Stalin's death, followed by their grandmother’s. At eight, the girls enter an orphanage where their mother reappears with Ramon, a Spanish trapeze artist scouting for a German circus. Irene is trained and becomes the circus’s star, but the grueling work takes its toll, culminating in a deliberate fall. Meanwhile, Helena secretly masters fire-eating. Now responsible for both her mother and sister, Helena's life with them becomes increasingly difficult, and the harsh realities of their existence begin to pull them apart.
