Description:
In 1974, a group of Mohawk Indians occupied an abandoned girls' camp in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, creating a community named Ganienkeh. Seeking to revive traditional ways of life and claim their ancestral lands, they lived there for three years, occasionally experiencing conflicts with nearby residents. In 1977, they reached a land agreement with the State and relocated to a permanent settlement near Plattsburgh, New York, where they reside now. Ganienkeh stands as a rare instance of an Indigenous community successfully regaining land from the U.S., and may foreshadow future movements.
