Saxophonist Art Pepper (1925-1982) lived a life reminiscent of Hollywood stories. His exceptional talent led to prominent performances as a young man, but drug use and related trouble sidelined him for much of the 1960s and early 1970s. This documentary, made shortly after his memoir *Straight Life* was published in 1979, captures Pepper during a remarkable comeback. His third wife, Laurie, plays a significant role; they met at the Synanon drug treatment center in 1969 and married in 1974. She managed his business and assisted him with *Straight Life*. Pepper recounts his experiences, but the film focuses on a vibrant performance at a Malibu club, where he plays brilliantly with a talented trio.
