Mahler's Symphony No. 8 is a monumental orchestral and choral work, rarely performed due to its immense scale. This film captures Edward Gardner's final concert as Chief Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, where he conducted Mahler's 8th Symphony at the Bergen International Festival. The performance received critical acclaim, winning the Critics' Prize for Music 2023–2024, and is celebrated for its powerful finale. Mahler envisioned his eighth symphony as a cosmic event, evoking the resonance of planets and suns. Its 1910 premiere challenged traditional symphonic forms.
