For 23 years, how has a queer, androgynous Brazilian man, raised in a Candomblé tradition, and with European immigrant roots, managed to gather over 60,000 people dancing to atabaque drums in the streets of Paris? This ritual, the Lavagem da Madeleine, which cleanses the steps of a French church, is deeply connected to the life of its creator, Robertinho Chaves, a dancer from the Paradis Latin cabaret. Searching for his identity within Paris's Afro-Brazilian community, he navigates the boundaries between masculinity and femininity, the sacred and the secular.
